About Northern Ireland Small Business Loan Fund

The Northern Ireland Small Business Loan Fund (NISBLF) provides loans from £10,000 to £125,000 to help start ups and established small businesses across Northern Ireland access the finance they need to grow. It forms part of Invest NI’s Access to Finance Strategy and is delivered in partnership with Ulster Community Finance Ltd and Enterprise Northern Ireland Ltd. The Fund specifically supports businesses that have been unable to access mainstream finance, offering an alternative source of capital to entrepreneurs, micro businesses, SMEs, sole traders, and social enterprises operating in Northern Ireland. Since 2013, NISBLF has provided over £19 million in loans to more than 700 businesses, backing companies at various stages of development across the region.

How It Works

The loan journey begins with a simple expression of interest, after which a dedicated Loan Executive works closely with the business to understand its plans and viability. Following a full assessment — which may include a site visit — approved borrowers receive funds on terms of up to five years, with options for repayment breaks and the possibility of early settlement rebates. Though loans are typically unsecured, personal guarantees may sometimes be requested, depending on circumstances. This relationship based approach ensures that applicants get practical guidance, and a supportive lending experience designed for small business realities in Northern Ireland.

Why Choose Us

NISBLF exists to support viable businesses that have been refused mainstream finance, providing a critical funding route for small and early‑stage companies across Northern Ireland. The Fund is managed by Ulster Community Finance Ltd, a subsidiary of Community Finance Ireland, and delivered through Enterprise Northern Ireland, ensuring a supportive and responsible approach to lending. Borrowers receive personal support from experienced loan executives, and smaller loans may include mentoring support to help founders strengthen their plans and build capacity. With over £19 million loaned to 700+ businesses, the Fund has enabled companies across sectors to expand premises, purchase equipment, hire staff, develop new products, and reach new markets.
